GARY: Side 1 ( from Act 1 – Scene 4 )
JENNIFER
But kids are dying…
GARY
Kids die every day. They even do it to themselves. Drugs. Alcohol. Drag racing on city streets…
Jennifer transfers herself into her wheelchair and moves closer to face her husband.
JENNIFER
You’re off the point. This is not about that, and you know it.
GARY
So what’s the point?
JENNIFER
How would you feel if nobody cared about my disease? If we didn’t have enough money to get the help I need—all the doctors and tests and—
GARY
(unmoved)
You can’t save everyone, Jennifer. We’re fortunate to have the money to keep you comfortable and out of danger, but we worked hard to get it. Maybe their parents should work a little harder…
JENNIFER
I can’t believe you!
GARY
(coldly)
Believe me.
For a moment, Jennifer studies his face, then turns and starts to wheel herself out of the room SL. Gary gets up and follows her. She stops and confronts him.
JENNIFER
What happened to you? You used to be so idealistic, so—
GARY
Yeah, well, we grow up, don’t we? Life is cold.
JENNIFER
Life is not cold. You’re cold! Have you forgotten who you are? You were always for the underdog. Don’t you remember?
GARY
(defensively)
I still care about the underdog. In fact, I can help even better now that I have financial clout. That’s why I started Fairway Records.
JENNIFER
You started Fairway because you thought record companies were ripping people off. Remember when you said you wanted to bring integrity back to the music business? That was you, wasn’t it? And what about your goal to promote artists that had talent—real talent? What happened to that? You started this company so you could be independent and do what you thought was right and fair. Not so you would have clout.
GARY
Clout’s how you make changes. No one listens to you unless you have clout, dear.
JENNIFER
Oh, Gary… I remember when there wasn’t a cynical bone in your body. You were my hero. I fell in love with you because you thought with your heart, not with your clout. You weren’t afraid to fight for what you believed. You followed your convictions fearlessly.
GARY
Well, people change. You gotta do what you gotta do or you’ll be left behind. You can’t expect me to be the same person I was twenty years ago—it’s just not gonna happen.
Jennifer moves closer to her husband and takes his hand.
JENNIFER
You may have changed, but I believe that boy’s still in there somewhere. You just don’t let him come out anymore.
Music starts for the song “Lost In You”
GARY: Side 2 ( from Act 2 – Scene 6 )
CHRIS
That was great. I haven’t seen the girls that excited since… ever. Thank you so much!
GARY
My pleasure. It was fun surprising them. They were hilarious. I’m glad Josh handles it so well. It’s not easy being admired like that.
CHRIS
Well, you, Mr. Gary Galvani, are surely admired around here. You’ve done such good for all of us. I wish I knew how to thank you.
GARY
You know what? When I’m here, I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile. So believe me, no thanks are needed. I think I’m getting more out of this than anyone.
Chris moves closer to him, looking at him meaningfully.
GARY
(taking a step away)
Oh… uh, I meant to ask you, did Kellie like her present?
CHRIS
(closing the gap again)
Probably not as much as I did finding it.
GARY
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did too.
Deliberately Gary turns away from Chris and starts picking up the scattered cards.
GARY (CONT’D)
I’d forgotten how much I love looking for treasures. Before she got sick, my wife was particularly good at it.
He scans the floor for any cards he might have missed, moving farther away from Chris, who does not follow.
GARY (CONT’D)
Jennifer always had a knack for recognizing what we rock hounds call a ‘Special Find.’ In fact, that’s what finally got me to call you. She told me she had a feeling you and your kids were a Special Find. And she was right. I’m glad she talked me into it.
(beat)
We’d love to take you to dinner sometime. Kellie could join us too.
CHRIS
Oh, that would be nice. I would like to meet her.
(glancing at her watch)
I’m sorry, Gary, I have to get going.
GARY
No problem. Me too.
Gary gestures for Chris to lead the way.
“Lost In You”
JENNIFER
Lost in you, lost in you
There’s a boy I used to know
Who changed the world and won this girl
He believed in something more
What he knew was clear and true
Don’t let him be lost in you
GARY
I don’t know the one you’re speaking of
Was there a time of broken dreams?
Yet, inside I wonder
Can I be once more the child who sees
And hopes and still believes?
JENNIFER
Lost in you, lost in you
There’s a boy who can still dream
He’s still there. If you dare,
He can still be found in you
Don’t let him be lost in you
“The Boardroom (Gary's Soliloquy section)”
GARY
I can’t believe what I believed before
I can’t believe in who I am anymore
So sad and so sorry, lost my way
So sad and so sorry now
